Probate Law

We are experts in the probate process and can bring an estate or trust through probate from beginning to end. This includes drafting and filing all required forms, IRS and state tax returns, reports, appearances at hearings and the like. We also work with the Probate Court in other matters, such as conservatorships and guardianships.

Business succession issues and post-mortem transfers of certain assets present special problems. We provide guidance and active representation on all issues arising from the transfer of ownership or management of estate assets. For example, closely held businesses with minority shareholders, professional businesses and real estate often present difficult issues which we can actively help you resolve.

We represent heirs or creditors who may have a claim against an estate or trust. This includes cases where there may be concerns about estate valuations, expenses or distributions. We also represent heirs, relatives and others who have viable legal or equitable claims against an estate or trust which are not recognized by the executor, trustee or administrator. We specialize in difficult or seemingly intractable estate cases.

Tax Law and Tax Controversy

We stand ready to help you with any tax problems you may have with the United States Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”), the State of Connecticut Department of Revenue Services or the New York Department of Taxation and Finance. We provide representation and advice at the audit level, on appeal or in Tax Court. We are accustomed to difficult tax situations, such as failures to file, domestic and offshore voluntary disclosures ("OVDI"), employee withholding taxes and offers in compromise ("OIC").

Estate Planning

Whether you have a sizeable international estate or a small nest egg, we can provide you with a cost effective estate plan that will honor your wishes, minimize or eliminate estate taxes and streamline probate. We will meet with you, ascertain your needs and draft the estate plan, including all required documentation. These documents can include, for example: wills, powers of attorney, living wills, special needs trusts, revocable and irrevocable trusts, family limited partnerships, deeds, incorporations and IRS filings. We also will make requisite filings.
